We have heard on many occasions that will be the year when eCommerce takes off in Spain. The good results achieved in 2009, which the CMT (Spain’s Telecommunications Market Commission) estimates at €5.972 billion, have encouraged the sector to hope this much-hoped for takeoff could actually happen, and that companies and consumers will start to trust this new sales channel, which is now making its presence felt.
The crisis may have helped to spark this development, because with less cash to hand both companies and individuals tend to look more carefully at how they spend their money. This is the backdrop against which the Internet has come into the picture, helping people to compare similar prices with just a few clicks and appealing to buyers with very competitive prices.
The online marketing sector trade fair OME Expo, held in Madrid in March, showed clear signs that eCommerce is starting to arouse great interest. And the first edition of Expo E-commerce Spain on 8 and 9 June, also in Madrid, backed up this idea, with more than 4,300 visitors attending the event and listening to the more than 125 speakers.
We were able to verify this interest for ourselves, since we had a presence at the fair too, at the information stand of the Spanish Institute for Foreign Trade (ICEX), where our four staff were rushed off their feet responding to all the queries posed by companies looking to branch out into selling online or using the Internet to sell outside Spain. Meanwhile, both the round table “Internationalization/e-Export”, moderated by ICEX, and the presentation given about the services that ICEX offers to help sell online, were extremely well attended by visitors, who filled the room to learn more about these subjects.
For this reason, we are also confident that this year will mark the takeoff of eCommerce, and that ever-increasing numbers of companies will be using this and electronic marketplaces as an additional way of buying and selling their products. With luck, by the end of the year you will be able to read here that all these encouraging signs have borne fruit.
